Synthetic Drugs: Legally Lethal

Articles focusing on “legal drugs,” like this one from Shorewood, Illinois have become more frequent over the last few years. Stores across the nation are offering illegal drugs disguised as legal bath salts, incense, potpourri, and other harmless products. Parents don’t consider the dangers because their teens appear to be buying products from retail stores. However, store owners and drug-using teens both know that these “legal” products are actually more dangerous than marijuana.

Understanding the Synthetic Drug Craze

These illicit products are sold in stores called “hedge shops.” Marketed as bath salts and incense, store owners offer these drugs to teens that want to get their hands on substances that will get them just as high as marijuana and other drugs. However, these synthetic drugs are even more dangerous than marijuana because they contain compounds like “JWH” which are extremely harmful and dangerous.

Though the EPA has banned products with these compounds, producers keep finding ways to provide new variants of the compound that haven’t been ruled as illegal yet. These drugs are much stronger which makes them that much more dangerous. Several teens have gone to the emergency room because of these synthetic drugs and some have even experienced comas, seizures, and mental loss.

Testing for Synthetic Drugs

The trickiest thing about synthetic drugs is that they’re hard to detect. Parents or employers suspicious of drug users may require teens to take a standard drug test. However, the typical 5-panel and 10-panel drug tests will only test for more traditional drugs – marijuana, cocaine, methadone, opiates, and more. These drug tests do not pick up if the teen is using synthetic drugs. Teens are able to pass a drug test in the lab with flying colors while parents leave scratching their heads. This is why it’s so important that parents understand that teens may be getting high off of synthetic substances and alternative tests may need to be run, like testing for synthetic marijuana or bath salts.

When Test Smartly Labs tests for synthetic drugs, we use a urine test and a saliva test to see what’s in the teen’s system. We often look for synthetic cannabinoids to figure out if a teen is using synthetic drugs and our tests can detect if synthetic compounds are in the bodily fluids.

Parents, we strongly encourage you to be proactive and get your teen tested for both traditional and synthetic drug use. If you see any out-of-place materials in their bedrooms such as strange salts, potpourri, or small, metallic packages, have a conversation with your teen. They may be using something that’s not only harmful but also has the power to be lethal.

IF YOU SUSPECT YOUR TEEN OF EXPERIMENTING WITH DRUGS OR ALCOHOL, WE PROVIDE ACCURATE AND CONFIDENTIAL DRUG TESTING. CALL (816) 800-9699 OR CONTACT TEST SMARTLY LABS TODAY. YOU CAN MAKE AN APPOINTMENT AT ANY OF OUR 5 KANSAS CITY AREA LOCATIONS.
