Summer Break is Here – Watch Your Kids for Signs of Drug Use

Summer’s in full swing! For many teens, this means days at the lake or the pool, afternoons at the mall, and nights with friends. But for some, break from school can also include drug use.

As parents, it’s your job to be vigilant about your teen’s drug use, especially during the summer when your kids are home from school and have more free time (and potentially less supervision).

Here are our tips for spotting signs of drug use in your teens this summer!

Watch Your Teens for Signs of Drug Use

Teen drug use can manifest in many ways. It’s important to look for both physical signs that affect your teen’s health and outward appearance, and behavioral signs that affect their emotions, relationships, and actions.

Physical Signs of Drug Use

The following physical conditions could indicate that your teen is experimenting with drug use:

  • Sudden changes in weight
  • General deterioration of appearance
  • Lack of care for personal grooming

  • Tremors
  • Slurring of speech
  • Coordination impairment: associated with depressants

    • Paranoia or anxiety: associated with use of marijuana, hallucinogens, and stimulants
  • Behavioral changes, including:
    • Sudden drop in attendance and performance
    • Increase in evasive or manipulative behavior, including lying and stealing
    • Sudden change in friend groups, hangout spots, and interests
    • Frequent run-ins with others or the law, including fights, accidents, and illegal behaviors
    • Lack of motivation and lethargy
    • Lowered inhibitions
