Helping Your Teenager Find a Great Summer Job

Most teens have their minds on relaxing at the pool and spending time with friends. As a parent, you can help your teen secure a good summer job and keep their mind goal-oriented. Here are tips for assisting your teen in finding a great summer job.

Know the Keywords

Sit down with your teen and brainstorm a list of good keywords to use as you look online. Add keywords like “part-time,” “paid internship,” “entry-level,” and “high school” and you will come up with a list of retail and food service jobs, mainly. Jobs like camp counselors and working at the public pool typically hire several months before summer break starts. Another position that is flexible, easy to obtain, and able to continue through the school year is working at a grocery store as a cashier, stocker, or bagger.

Help With Resumes

When you are a teenager it seems impossible to create anything more than the thinnest resume ever. Not much has happened so far. Remember, teens should include any leadership positions at school and/or your church, mosque, temple, etc., as well as special skills and awards.  You can also provide them help with cover letters, though those aren’t usually necessary for such positions.

Explain the Interview Process

Background: Explain that prospective employers might evaluate their application before starting the interview process. They may not even get a call, explain that it happens to everyone.
Interview questions: Stage a mock interview, it’s a fun way to make your teen feel comfortable answering employers’ questions.
Drug testing: Employers are realizing the importance of drug testing temporary employees. Prep your teen by explaining the common forms of drug testing.

A summer job is a fantastic way to keep your teen out of trouble, saving money, learning responsibility, and prepare them for answering similar questions about themselves on college applications or essays.
