Drug-Impaired Driving is Just as Bad as Drinking and Driving

Everybody knows that drinking and driving is dangerous. The legal and often deadly consequences make it very clear that drunk driving is against the law. With more teenagers using marijuana and the opiate epidemic engulfing the country, there has now been a rise in reports of drugged driving.

Statistics on Drugged Driving

Drugged driving is just as dangerous as drinking and driving:

  • A 2011 survey of middle and high school students showed that, in the two weeks prior to the survey, 12 percent of high school seniors had driven after using marijuana, compared to about nine percent who reported driving after drinking alcohol.
  • Monitoring the Future Study (MTF) found that one in 12 high school seniors reported driving after smoking marijuana.
  • In 2014, 10 million people aged 12 or older reported driving under the influence of illicit drugs in the past year.

Statistics will vary by school and state, but it is still abundantly clear that teens have a problem with drugged driving. While marijuana isn’t the worst drug out there, the number of students having reported driving under it are still at some risk due to the impaired motor skills, lack of attentiveness, and slowed reaction time that comes with using it.

With the opiate crisis worsening in America, teens have access to harder drugs. If you think driving under the influence of marijuana is dangerous, prescription painkillers and heroin are powerful narcotics that usually knock out the user within minutes. There is extreme potential for death in such a situation.

Advice For Teens

If you are at a party, out with friends, or even at school and you know someone who is under the influence of drugs, even prescribed pain medication for an injury, you should make sure they have a safe way home. Heavy marijuana or opiate use will make it difficult for them to make a clear, informed decision. If they aren’t taking a bus, taxi service, or having someone else drive them, ask if they would prefer you or a parent to drive.
